Remote configuration failed on WSUS Server

Last week I upgraded my ConfigMgr 2012 environment to SP1. All went fine, but after the upgrade Endpoint Protection wouldn't update anymore. Strange thing is my environment was already provided with KB2720211 and KB2734608, and was working okay before the SP1 upgrade. Looking in the logfiles the following error messages were seen in: "Remote configuration failed on WSUS Server".

WindowsUpdate.log

wsyncmgr.log

WCM.log (before)

Looking on MS TechNet I found the following post: Remote configuration failed on WSUS Server.

For me this did the trick:

1) Uninstall WSUS (without database, logfiles, updates)
2) Install WSUS again + KB2720211 + KB2734608 updates
3) Reboot the server (you never know)
4) Start "Synchronize Software Updates"

WCM.log (after)

After that WSUS synchronization is working again and Endpoint Protection is up-to-date on all servers now. Good thing to know when you update your environment to SP1 I think.

Update 8-1-2013: For it seems it's a known issue in SP1 when using specific WSUS ports. Just change the ports back to the ports configured earlier on your Software Update Point and you'll be fine!

  1. There's a known issue with SP1 resetting the port number for the Software Update Point configuration. It's possible that your error was caused simply because the port number was incorrect.

It's also possible that merely rebooting the SUP solved the problem too.

While uninstalling-reinstalling a WSUS server is generally a pretty trivial thing (especially when keeping the database and content), it's also usually overkill as a first solution.

I'm not quite understanding how you got 'reinstall WSUS' out of that Technet forum post, and it's also worth of note that the forum post is [a] four years old, and [b] never actually resolved (the original poster abandoned the thread). So from that post, we don't really know what the original poster's problem was either -- and could well have been simply setting the wrong port.

  2. You're right that uninstalling-reinstalling a WSUS server is maybe short-sighted, but hey it helps me!

Next time I have this issue, I will have a look at port numbers. Rebooting the SUP didn't sesolve the issue.

    1. Just try to change both ports to 8530 and 8531. Then try again. Hope it helps!

    1. What error message is found in WCM.log? This because it's mentioned in above error message.

    1. Have you tried my original solution already?
      1) Uninstall WSUS (without database, logfiles, updates)
      2) Install WSUS again + KB2720211 + KB2734608 updates
      3) Reboot the server (you never know)
      4) Start "Synchronize Software Updates"
Just make sure IIS website and SUP is on ports 8530 and 8531

    1. YEs, the solution can be found in the blogpost also. For it seems it's a known issue in SP1 when using specific WSUS ports. Just change the ports back to the ports configured earlier on your Software Update Point and you'll be fine!

    1. In my opinion port 8530/8531, but depends on SCCM/WSUS config
